Consider Kitty Litter Choices Print E-mail

3 Reasons:

  1. Health of your cats and other pets in your home
  2. Your health
  3. Our planet's health

Kitty litter is leaving a huge carbon footprint. Conventional clumping litter has got to go! It’s bad for the environment, your health and bad for the health of our cats.

Health
The main offender is sodium bentonite, a natural clay ingredient that expands into a hard mass when it comes into contact with moisture. In a powder form within the litter, cats inhale the fine particles when they dig around in the litter. While the clumping clay is convenient for cleaning, it’s not great for kitty or for you. Ever time you pour it the dust goes into your air. There have been many reports of illnesses related to inhalation of clay in cats and humans. Cats can also ingest the clay while cleaning their paws and some even develop sores on their pads from it.

Silica-based litters are not much better. This porous granular form of sodium silicate absorbs odours and moisture but is also easily inhaled by humans and felines. It’s been linked to lung cancer, bronchitis and tuberculosis. Some cats can end up with a fatal form of pulmonary tuberculosis called silico-tuberculosis.

Eco-Pawprint
Clay-based and silica-based litters have an adverse effect on the environment. They are produced by the destructive method of strip-mining. Neither clay nor silica can decompose any further because they are already in their natural state. Consider that over two million tons of non-biodegradable cat litter ends up in municipal landfills each year. Most of that litter, an estimated 100,000 truckloads per year, is made from clay that is mined and doesn’t biodegrade because it’s never reabsorbed by the earth. Please reconsider your choice in litter. There are more options available, natural, biodegradable, healthier options.
